Family-Friendly Hikes in Lake George

Hiking is a fun, healthy activity for the whole family and there’s no better place to get out and explore than Lake George. Although the Adirondacks are known for the High Peaks, the Lake George area has several easier hiking trails for families with children. If you’re looking for some outdoor adventure, all of these trails are suitable for beginners and offer great views.

Up Yonda Farm

Located in Bolton Landing, NY, just 20 minutes from our family-friendly campground, Up Yonda Farm is an environmental education center with more than seven easy-to-moderate trails covering three miles. Check out the Sugar Trail, highlighting the maple sugaring activities and views of the Sugar House, or the Green Trail, featuring a wide variety of birds. While you’re there, explore the butterfly garden, pond, museum and sensory garden.

Shelving Rock Falls Hike

Shelving Rock Falls is a relatively easy hike in Fort Ann, NY, about 35 minutes from King Phillip’s Campground. Although the trail is not steep, the path starts out rocky, and can get slippery, so you’ll just need to use caution at the beginning. Once past the rocks, a wide trail takes you down the mountain and alongside beautiful waterfalls. Bring your water shoes and bathing suits for a dip in the stony pool at the base of the falls or follow the water further downstream to Lake George.

Shelving Rock Summit Hike

Similar to the falls, Shelving Rock Summit is also rated easy and great for young families. There is some uphill, but the path is a former carriage trail, so it’s wide and not very steep. The hike is 1.7 miles each way and typically takes an hour to summit and 30 minutes to descend. While there’s not much of a view at the peak, you can take a small narrow path approximately 100 yards for fantastic views of Lake George and the surrounding mountains.

Pinnacle Overlook Hike

Just over 20 minutes from King Phillip’s Campground, Pinnacle is a moderately-easy hike in Bolton Landing, NY. Although it’s only 1.5 miles roundtrip, this hike features some uphill climbs, including two steep spots, but it’s still family-friendly. It’s also a dog-friendly hike for leashed pets. Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake George, the Tongue Mountain range, Buck Mountain, Dome Island and Trout Lake.
